Elephant Ears
This big guy is spectacular! (3rd photo from left above, let your mouse hover over it to see full photo.)
I bought it at the Farmers Market and planted him at the edge of The White Garden – right by the front steps – a spot that gets no sun until after 1:00 pm.
At time of purchase, it had two stems – each one maybe a foot tall.
By late fall – it had multiple stems – about three feet tall.
Its large glossy leaves give it an exotic look. A lovely specimen.
The woman who sold it to me said it might come back in the spring if our winter isn’t too harsh – as long as I cut it back in October and covered it over with lots of mulch. So I did that. As I write this, it’s 15 degrees and there are several inches of snow on the ground – so hmm. We’ll see just how strong this big guy is.
If he doesn’t come back, I will try hard to replace him. At least I have this photo – and notecards too. Feel free to order some of your own. They look like the photo below – only larger – 6 1/4 X 4 5/8 inches.
In case you want to know the other inhabitants of The White Garden: baby’s breath (in the photo), candy tuft, white azaleas, low growing gardenias, dusty miller, verbena and calla lillies. In the fall, when all the blooms are gone and many of these things die back, I add a few white pansies which last through late May or early June when the perennials start doing their thing again. When they do, The White Garden is quite a sight – especially at night.
